Blue Sea wrote a very good diary on this issue for people just starting to give to campaigns and the like, but I wanted to offer advice for those who already have, and my comment quickly entered into diary territory, so here it is:
This is great advice, but doesn’t help anyone already on all of those lists. I’m probably on every Democratic list in the country (and actually did end up on a Trump list after helping my husband purchase a gag gift for a VERY left-leaning friend 🤣) and kind of don't care (sometimes, it’s interesting, actually). 😂
There is an iPhone app that filters out texts — I see them on my MacBook Pro via the messages app, but they don’t light up my phone or even, for the most part, show in my texts on my phone unless I specifically look for them. Additionally, my phone is almost always on do not disturb (DND), so I don’t see calls from unknown sources — if they genuinely wish to reach me for something important, they can bloody well leave a VM. Also, anyone you add to your favorites list will get through the DND. I have a decent number of people that I absolutely do want to break through that. I also always keep my phone on silent, so I just get a buzz and no more.
For email, I use the Spark email client on my laptop, and the gmail app on my phone, both of which are just native apps for accessing my Google-hosted email. Both, but especially Spark, do a very good job of sorting emails into separate groups in my inbox (the gmail app is less important to me anyway, since I don't use my phone much for email). The campaign stuff basically all ends up in “newsletters” and I mostly just ignore it and archive the whole lot every couple days.
Additionally, at least with email, you can set up manual filters to catch any stragglers that get through. Be careful, though, as you may inadvertently capture stuff you actually want (a good filter for emails might be the “Paid for by * for” line, but that could still catch extra stuff — if you know how to do advanced queries, you can get pretty close, though).
So, yes, it is possible to free yourself of the nuisance without dropping ActBlue or unsubscribing from every campaign that sends you something. It takes a wee bit of extra effort, but at least how I’ve done it, I am basically never bothered by any of it and can still see it when I wish to.
Also, one last point: unsubscribing from campaigns actually hurts them more than you may realize. Bounces do too as well, so definitely don’t use fake email/cell numbers — campaigns actually get dinged by various anti-spam systems throughout the chain and can even find themselves blacklisted by some of the biggest anti-spam services which get used by nearly all providers. If too many do that and they get blacklisted, it is an absolute bitch to undo that (I know, I worked with folks that had to deal with that on the regular for client campaigns — it was a frequent cause of kvetching in the office 😉).
BTW, this advice may not work for everyone. I am basically in front of my computer nearly all day and don’t have to deal with a lot of calls and such from unknown people
